How Do I Choose Between Fitness Boxing, Kids Boxing And Competitive Boxing?

Alright, so you’ve decided. Great. Next comes the difficult part, what is right for you? This is a question we hear frequently when folks walk through our doors here in Kidman Park. Don’t worry, there is no wrong answer, only the wrong option if you choose incorrectly.

There are 3 main options available.

  • Fitness Boxing. You want to lose weight, de-stress, feel better, feel more energetic, improve your health and wellbeing. Our Boxing for Fitness Adelaide classes and HIIT Boxing Classes are perfect for this type of training. There is no sparring, no competition, simply working bags and pads really hard.
  • Kids and Teens. Parents from all around the Western Suburbs bring their kids for exercise and discipline. Our Kids Boxing Classes Adelaide and Teen Boxing Classes Adelaide aim to develop coordination and discipline as well as boxing technique. With our Junior Boxing Club Adelaide children are encouraged to progress at their own pace, some are focused on fitness only, others are developing skills to eventually fight competitively.
  • Competitive Amateur Boxing. This is where it gets real. Amateur Boxing Training Adelaide is ideal for those who wish to learn proper footwork, boxing technique, conditioning themselves to fight and compete in amateur bouts. Our club is registered with Boxing SA, so we coach you to be able to fight in sanctioned competitions.

There is one other point to mention though, most people aren’t sure where they fit in the categories above.

Quite a few of our Women’s Boxing Classes Adelaide participants began wanting to lose some weight and ended up becoming passionate about the sport. There are plenty of males in our Men’s Boxing Classes Adelaide who have done the same. That’s okay, we don’t expect you to know straight away.

We ask a few simple questions to determine which is the right program for you: Are you looking to become healthier, stronger, or have a goal you want to achieve in sport? Decide that and the right class becomes clear.

What Will My First Boxing Session Be Like?

The hardest part is getting through the door the first time, believe me. After that, we take care of you. You don’t require any equipment, wraps, gloves or prior knowledge. Just wear something you can move around in, and bring a water bottle. Our coaches will welcome you as you enter, ask about injuries or goals, and get you warming up with the rest of the group. Here’s what a typical first beginners boxing class looks like in our Kidman Park club: Quick warm up, get the blood pumping and get the brain engaged! Stance and footwork, stability is key. Jab, cross and basic combinations, slow explanations, lots of repetition. Pad work or bag work, depending on numbers in attendance that night. Cool down, and chat about what to work on next time.

Everyone is too busy looking at themselves to care whether you make a mistake. 9/10 newbies are amazed at how fast they get the hang of things once they’re broken down into simple parts. You can have a 50yo bloke and a teenager on the same bag, working on the same jab.

Are you nervous about going to a boxing class for the first time? Yep. That feeling goes away after the warm up. You may find you’re sharing a class with people of different ages. Sometimes our Group Boxing Classes and Kids Boxing Classes are running on the same gym floor, separated only by age and experience.

If you’re coming to our Boxing Gym Adelaide | Just Box for the first time, rest assured that there’s nothing scary or hostile about what you’ll see. Our qualified boxing coaches will be there to observe your stance, your hands, your feet, your guard, and guide you through any necessary adjustments.

Kids Boxing Classes: Safety and Age-Appropriate Coaching

We get asked this question at least once a week. Is boxing safe for a 9 year old? Good question. The honest answer is: it depends on the class and how it’s run. This is why we structure our Kids Boxing Classes and Youth Boxing classes according to age and ability, instead of chucking a load of kids, pads and gloves into a room and crossing our fingers.

Our younger kids in our Kids Boxing Club Adelaide classes spend most of their time working on footwork, balance and basic pad work with a coach watching every rep. There’s no sparring or contact drills, just the basic skills that we feel must be mastered before progressing. This is the way we’d like our own kids to train.

The older kids in our teen boxing classes have more complex combinations and conditioning work to learn. There’s still plenty of pad work going on under supervision, but this is where the focus shifts towards discipline as well as physical development. That is what a Junior Boxing Club Adelaide is all about, kids progressing at their own pace, not on a rigid schedule.

We are a registered Boxing South Australia club and our coaches are qualified, which is more important than many people realise until they’ve seen an unregulated class being taught elsewhere.

During school holidays, we run special School Holiday Boxing Programs, and these fill up very quickly for Kidman Park parents looking for something for their kids to do during the holidays. Kids will be exhausted at the end of these classes, but they’ll also stand a little taller. This is discipline taking effect, not just exercise. If your kid is restless after school and you’d like them to put that energy to good use, here’s where they start.

Signs You Should Wait Before Joining a Boxing Gym

Some people aren’t ready to start straight away, and that’s okay. Rather than have you show up to class and give up after a week, I’d rather be honest with you about whether you’re ready to train or not.

If you’ve recently had a concussion, an unresolved shoulder problem, or have any kind of cardiac condition that hasn’t been cleared by a doctor, then please wait and get clearance first. Boxing places a significant amount of stress on your joints, your core, your cardiovascular system. These aren’t things to ignore.

Expecting a baby? Speak to your doctor first. This applies if you’re recovering from surgery in the last few months, particularly anything related to your wrists, hands or spine. It happens every week, somebody eager to begin but their body requires a few more weeks of recuperation before they can commit.

Then there’s the mental aspect. If you have been persuaded by your mother, partner or friend to join, you may not follow through. Boxing attracts those who are willing to turn up and do the work. If you are not quite ready to make that commitment, that is perfectly fine. Return when you are.

Just a final note. If you are looking for a fast solution, perhaps a six week transformation ahead of a wedding or holiday, boxing is likely not for you. Proper form, great stamina, true grit, these traits take many months to cultivate. Nine times out of ten, those who benefit the most from a boxing gym are people who recognise that this is a process, not a short-term solution. That might not be your aim right now, and that’s okay. Return later when it is.

Boxing Gym Pricing Clarified

I can tell you’re pondering the cost. It’s fine. The silver lining is that boxing gym pricing isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it shouldn’t be. A 15-year-old signing up for two Teen Boxing Classes a week has different needs to an amateur boxer coming in for five classes a week, including sparring. As with us, several gyms base their pricing on your attendance frequency and what level of training you require.

The biggest distinction is the class type. The price per session of Group Boxing Training and HIIT Boxing is less than 1 on 1 Boxing Coaching because the coach is splitting their focus across a group rather than concentrating on you. Kids Boxing Classes and Youth Boxing are often priced separately from adult classes, and usually feature sessions during school holidays so that kids can burn off some excess energy when they are home. Amateur Boxing Training Adelaide athletes tend to pay a higher rate, and that’s fair because technical sparring, pad work and fight prep all require individualised focus from an expert coach.

You’ll pay more if you attend four or five times a week than if you come once a week. Doesn’t that make sense? You get more coaching in return for your money. Some gyms offer long-term contracts. Others are monthly. Find out before you sign on the dotted line, as this will affect your level of flexibility if you want to take some time off when the local footy team is playing or when your exams are approaching.

If I was in your shoes, here are the questions I’d ask:

  • Is there a trial period before I commit to a membership?
  • Does the price include coaching or just facility access?
  • Are youth and adult fees and class schedules different?
  • Can I pause my membership during footy season or exams?

We’re a registered Boxing South Australia club, and our coaches are accredited. These are details to keep in mind when reviewing what is included in a membership over and above the price tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Amateur Boxing Gym in SA

What should I bring to my first boxing class at your Kidman Park gym?

You just need clothes you can move in and a water bottle. You don’t need gloves, wraps, or any boxing experience before you walk in. Our coaches greet every new person at the door, ask about injuries or goals, then guide you through the warm-up with the rest of the class. Most first-timers are surprised how fast the basics click once we break them into simple steps. Nobody expects you to know what you’re doing on day one.

What happens after my first boxing class?

After your first class, your coach will talk with you about what to work on next. This might mean more footwork drills, tighter combinations, or moving from bag work to pad work with a partner. There’s no pressure to commit to a set schedule right away. Many people start once a week and build up from there once they feel comfortable. Kids in our junior classes move through skills at their own pace instead of a fixed timeline.

Is your boxing gym registered with Boxing SA?

Yes, our Kidman Park club is registered with Boxing SA. This matters if you want to compete in official amateur bouts one day, since registration is part of how those matches get set up. It also means our competitive boxing training follows a structured path, from footwork and ring craft to conditioning and eventually sparring. Even if you never plan to compete, training under a registered club means your coaching follows a proper structure, not a random routine.

How do I choose between fitness boxing and competitive boxing?

Start by asking yourself why you’re coming in. If you want to burn calories and relieve stress, our fitness boxing classes are hitting bags and pads with no sparring involved. If you want to build ring craft and eventually fight in official bouts, competitive amateur training is the better fit. Many members don’t know which one they want at first. That’s normal. We ask a few questions about your goals in your first visit and the right class usually becomes clear.

Is boxing safe for kids in Kidman Park?

Yes, when the class is structured for your child’s age and ability. Younger kids in our junior program spend their time on footwork, balance, and basic pad work, with a coach watching every rep and no sparring or contact drills. Older teens move into more complex combinations and conditioning once those basics are solid. Parents ask us this nearly every week, and the honest answer is that safety comes down to how the class is run, not just the sport itself.

Should I wait before joining a boxing gym if I’ve had an injury?

Yes, if you’ve recently had a concussion or another injury, it’s worth waiting before you start training. We’d rather be upfront with you than have you push through class and set back your recovery. Once you’ve been cleared, our coaches will check in on your goals and any past injuries before your first warm-up. This helps us adjust drills so you can train safely from day one, whether you’re joining fitness boxing or the competitive program.
